This is the general landing page for the metalshop. There's a lot going on in the metalshop, so we have several sub-teams listed below. For general questions, come check us out on slack at #team-metal-shop
The metalshop is split into the following sub-areas/teams:
- When doing any hot work (ie work that makes use of flames or generates sparks), or if sparks were accidentally generated, a 1-hour firewatch is MANDATORY.
- For the first 30 minutes of this firewatch, you must remain in the metalshop. You may continue working on other parts of your project, or begin your cleanup, but keep an eye out for any smoke or flames. You may leave briefly if you have someone else watching over the room.
- For the final 30 minutes of the firewatch, you must remain in the building, and you must return for a final check at the end of the 30 minute period.
- Please note that no cutting, grinding, or sanding of fibreglass or carbon fibre is permitted in the Metal Shop, or anywhere in the lab.
- No magnesium or magnesium alloys are permitted to be worked on, as we lack the capability to work with this material safely.
- Sparks and flames should only happen inside the welding/grinding area. This means the following:
- No cutting steel on the chopsaw
- If sparks happen when cutting on either bandsaw, stop the cut immediately
- Any work with a torch must be done in the welding area
A full list of metalshop tools can be found here. A short list of tools requiring training is as follows:
- Bridgeport Mill
- CNC Mill
- Southbend Lathe
- Watchmaker's Lathe
- MIG Welder
- TIG Welder
- Stained Glass tools
- Most (all?) Jewellery hand tools
- Lapidary Wheel
- Diamond Saw
- Clean up after yourself. This includes putting away tools, cleaning up chips, and sweeping the floor
- No storage of member projects in the metalshop (this is a lab-wide rule). Anything abandoned in the metalshop may end up being put with the other free material.
- There is some free material available near the heater in the back corner of the room. This material is intended for training ,and as a “take-a-penny, leave-a-penny” system. This means that you should feel free to use a small amount (or leave leftovers from your project), but please don't make an entire project purely out of material you find in the free bin.
¶ Maintenance
- What maintenance needs to be done every day (aside from picking up after yourself when you're done, that should be obvious but feel free to restate it here if people need a reminder)
- What maintenance needs to be done every week?
- What maintenance needs to be done every month?
- Is there any other maintenance that maybe only needs to happen periodically?
¶ Maintenance Manuals/Guides
- Are there any maintenance manuals or guides that exist. If so link to them here. They can be internal (stored on your teams google drive) or external (linked to the online manual)
- Does your area have any consumables
- Where are the extras stored
- How do you purchase more or request that more be purchased when they run out
- Link to the consumables policy page
- Are there any regularly planned social events for your area?
- Are there any regular information nights (eg. Textiles Orientation Night)
- Anything else we missed that does fit about put here
